They would reference back to what happened in the past, our great-grandparents, cultures, incidents, and a whole lot. A name forgotten, a date skipped, or a lineage mixed up could cause a stir. If someone noticed a mistake, trust cracked. You would hear murmurs: “Is that how it really happened?”
We listened not only for the rhythm of their words but also for correctness and consistency. Trust was not automatic, it was earned, and it could easily be lost.
Today, I see the same principle at work in generative AI. Just like those childhood evenings listening to oral history, users lean in, listening closely to what AI produces. If the outputs feel wrong, inconsistent, or biased, trust cracks. Once trust is broken, it is hard to repair. That’s why designing for trust in generative AI outputs is not just a technical problem. It’s a UX challenge, a design challenge, and most importantly, a human challenge.
Why Trust Matters in Generative AI
Generative AI models, from ChatGPT to MidJourney, are becoming part of our daily work and creativity. But without trust, adoption stalls. Deloitte has a dedicated framework for building trust in AI systems. This framework emphasizes the need for systems that are fair, transparent, and secure. There are often concerns about data privacy, bias, and the difficulty of explaining how an AI model reached a particular conclusion.
Trust is not just about factual correctness. It spans:
Transparency: Can users see how and why an answer was generated?
Consistency: Are outputs reliable across different use cases?
Bias & Fairness: Does the AI avoid harmful stereotypes or skewed perspectives?
Accountability: Who takes responsibility if AI makes a mistake?
Without designing for these pillars, generative AI risks becoming like an elder who tells captivating stories but can’t be relied on for truth.

Case Study 1: OpenAI’s System Cards — Transparency in Outputs

Users gain visibility into known weaknesses (e.g., hallucinations, bias).
Transparency builds credibility, just like an elder admitting memory gaps rather than pretending to be flawless.

Case Study 2: Google’s AI Overview Rollout — When Trust Cracks
When Google launched AI Overviews in search in 2024, screenshots quickly circulated online of bizarre or wrong answers (like “eat one rock a day” as nutrition advice).

Just like my elders reciting genealogy, correctness was key. A broken chain of names meant broken trust. In digital products, we must carry that same responsibility. Users are listening closely. If the stories we design with AI outputs don’t hold truth and consistency, murmurs begin, credibility falters.
Trust is not gifted, it is earned through transparency, consistency, and respect.
